Time Backstage
This page analyses only what became visible during Session 0. Information still reserved for Time and the continuation of the campaign is not published here.
The files preserved for this session let us follow both resolutions and their public consequences precisely. They do not reliably establish which elements were prepared in advance and which were improvised. This page therefore does not manufacture that distinction.
Opening Situation
The session opens under immediate pressure: a Tarshite patrol is moving toward the cave of an old Kolati shaman.
Sorane brings both the information and a time constraint. Edkored is not trying to defeat the six soldiers. His plan is to draw their attention away, save the shaman, and disappear into terrain he knows.
That becomes the first Focus.
Resolution 1 — diverting the patrol
Edkored has four Bets:
- Air Rune;
- Hill Survivor;
- Sorane;
- Movement Rune.
The patrol opposes him with three:
- Experienced Infantry;
- Hound;
- Discipline.
The result is a Victory, 3 Successes to 2.
The Focus is fulfilled: the patrol leaves the trail, the shaman is safe, and Edkored escapes. But the fiction does not reset. The lightning was spectacular and the hunt begins.
The resolution therefore does not answer “who wins the fight?” It answers exactly the question posed by the Focus.
From one result to a new Situation
A raven of Orlanth drops a pierced alynx fang and flies toward Torkan Valley.
Edkored chooses to read the gesture as a divine message and follow it. The session then shifts directly into another emergency: at Still Lake, a young Mudhen and his alynx are badly wounded.
The fetish immediately becomes more than found equipment. Edkored uses it to approach the alynx without provoking its hostility.
Resolution 2 — keeping Vorlak alive
The first roll opposes three Bets to three.
Edkored
- Known Ritual;
- Mud and water present;
- Alynx's Acceptance.
Middle World Adversity
- Depth of the wound;
- Cold and damp;
- Urgency and exposure.
The result is a Status quo, 2 Successes to 2.
Vorlak does not die immediately, but he is not saved. The situation remains open and time continues to weigh on the scene.
Edkored chooses escalation: he refuses to give up and adds another Bet, desperation. Adversity also gains a Bet through the cold.
This time Edkored scores 3 Successes to 1: a Feat.
The bleeding stops. The magic leaves a visible manifestation, the Mudhens arrive, and the rescue immediately changes Edkored's position with them.
What the session makes durable
By the end of Session 0, several elements have moved from scene detail into lasting Traces:
- the alynx fetish, received after the diversion and already useful in the fiction;
- the hunt triggered by the display of lightning;
- the Mudhens' debt, because Vorlak owes Edkored his life;
- Gringolf's hospitality, which carries Edkored toward Orstalor Spearlord's crannog.
These elements enter the Living Portrait. In later Situations they may become Bets, constraints, or new problems.
What this session shows about GP
Two movements are especially clear.
First, the Focus protects the fiction from the implicit logic of “combat.” Edkored does not need to kill the patrol: he needs to save the shaman and escape. The resolution decides that, and only that.
Second, a Status quo is not an absence of event. It creates an unstable position in which the table must decide whether to accept the result or commit more. Here, escalation reveals something deeply personal: Edkored refuses to let Vorlak die and turns that refusal into a Bet.
The session's loop is therefore unusually readable:
Situation → Focus → Bets → consequence → new Situation → Trace
The system does not only describe what Edkored can do. It preserves what, during this night, has begun to weigh on his story.
