A World Marked by Runes

In Glorantha, Runes are not merely abstract symbols. They shape the world and may become visible in people, objects, buildings, and landscapes.

You do not need to know how to interpret every Rune before playing. Start by noticing that Glorantha can show what it is.

Runic colors

A strong affinity may appear in skin, eyes, hair, clothing, materials, or magical effects.

Some useful associations:

  • Air: orange or blue;
  • Earth: olive green or brown;
  • Moon: red or white;
  • Water: blue or white;
  • Darkness: dull gray or black;
  • Fire/Sky: yellow or red.

These marks may be present from birth, appear at initiation, intensify during a ceremony, or change after a Heroquest.

These correspondences are landmarks, not a universal code. Different cultures may make the same Rune visible in different ways.

Runic forms

Forms themselves may echo the Runes: architecture, jewelry, weapons, fields, coins, clothing patterns, or ritual objects.

There is no rule imposing the same form on every culture. Instead ask how this culture makes this Rune visible.

A sword may express Death, a spiral Movement, a square space Stasis — but these associations become interesting when they say something about the people, place, or Situation that carries them.

During a Heroquest

In the Otherworld, runic correspondences may become much clearer than in everyday life. A color can saturate an entire scene, a body can draw closer to a mythical form, or an object can suddenly reveal what it represents.

A significant enough transformation can return with the Protagonist and become a new lasting truth.

In play

The runic imprint first serves to make Glorantha visible.

When it becomes important in a Situation, it can also become a Bet: a color recognized as the sign of a cult, a weapon whose shape expresses Death, a bodily mark that reveals an initiation, and so on.

Do not try to scatter Runes through every description. A few meaningful signs are enough. What matters is that players can notice them and decide what to do with them.
