Watch
Anticipate danger so nothing can surprise you again.
This booklet explores a human gesture that protects, connects and supports — and may then become the only way left to answer the world.
The human gesture
To watch is to pay attention, protect, remember what others forget and remain present when someone is vulnerable. It can be a profound form of love and responsibility.
Its latent closure
The gesture closes when uncertainty becomes unbearable. Rest begins to resemble a fault; delegating, abandonment. Every event risks becoming a warning that everyone else still refuses to see.
Colour of the five depths
| Depth | Direction |
|---|---|
| Mask | I notice what others miss; I warn, prepare and stay awake. |
| Protection | I watch exits, memorise schedules, repeat checks or always imagine the worst before it arrives. |
| Attachment | Someone, somewhere or a promise still depends on my vigilance. |
| Wound | Once I failed to see it coming; I arrived too late; no one believed me while there was still time. |
| Inner World | Details announce danger. As long as I keep watch, catastrophe remains suspended. |
Ambivalences to preserve
- protecting someone / controlling them;
- perceiving a real danger / manufacturing coherence between signs;
- longing finally to sleep / trusting no one to take over.
No thread should resolve these tensions in advance.
Fragment bank
note
Choosing a fragment does not fix a complete history. Its relationship with other depths will be created secretly by the player, then discovered in play.
Mask
- I know the name of everyone who comes through this door.
- I always sleep closest to the exit.
- I warn people before they even ask.
- I notice immediately what has changed.
Protection
- I check three times what others say they already checked.
- I imagine the worst first; that way it cannot surprise me.
- I stay awake when others lower their guard.
- I always keep an exit and a witness in sight.
Attachment
- Someone relies on me to come home alive.
- The room next door must never stay silent for too long.
- I keep the watch of the person I was supposed to wake.
- I watch over a promise no one else remembers.
Wound
- I thought he was still asleep.
- Once, I laughed when someone asked me for help.
- Everyone said there was no danger.
- I had been entrusted with one thing, and I looked away.
Inner World
- Accidents always warn someone before they happen.
- When every door is closed, something chooses a window.
- If I fall asleep first, tomorrow will not be the same.
- The lights flicker to count those who are missing.
