The Collective

We made it. No one commands it.

The Collective is the Horizon of what humans have made together and what now exceeds them: Money, the Nation, the City, Communication, Technology. No one wanted it as it is; millions of gestures produced it, and it now acts on each of us.

It is the most recent Horizon in appearance, and the oldest in reality: the Romans already honored the genius of every city. Old gods sometimes fade when no one honors them anymore; new ones are born from our habits.

Why Agents

The difference of scale. The Collective is made of millions of people, yet none of them can grasp it. It has no body, no face, no hand. To act somewhere, it needs someone to embody it: the one who sets a price, who carries a flag, who holds the tool, who speaks to millions.

What each side experiences. Through Agents, humans experience being carried — or crushed — by something greater than themselves, which they nonetheless made. Through them, the Collective meets what it does not contain: a face, an exception, a conscience, a refusal.

What is transformed. Here, the loop is shortest. The Powers of the Collective live only on what humans do: when practices change, they change — or die.

Powers

Money

What makes everything comparable to everything else.

  • Everything can be exchanged
  • Circulates endlessly
  • Measures everything
  • Exists only if people believe in it

The Nation

A people who think of themselves as a single body.

  • Us and the others
  • Tells itself an origin
  • Demands the dead
  • Outlasts its children

Communication

What makes messages circulate — and the messages themselves.

  • Connects everything it touches
  • Amplifies
  • Is never silent
  • Does not tell true from false

The City

Strangers living together.

  • Gathers strangers
  • Never sleeps
  • Rebuilds itself on itself
  • Forgets its inhabitants

Technology

The tool, and what the tool makes of us.

  • Does things in our place
  • Whatever can be done will be done
  • Never goes back
  • Escapes those who made it

Families of Agents

The suggested traits are Bond traits: each comes from the relationship itself or from the Attribute shown. The Agent's Anchors belong to them and remain to be written.

Changers — Money

Lenders, merchants, bankers, those who set prices. The Bond is a contract.

  • Knows the price of everything, from Measures everything;
  • Their signature binds, from Exists only if people believe in it;
  • Money comes to them, from Circulates endlessly.

What the figure lets us think: what has a price and what does not.

Heralds — the Nation

Soldiers, national poets, founders, those who carry the flag. The Bond is belonging.

  • Speaks in the name of all, from the belonging itself;
  • Their presence rallies, from Us and the others;
  • Does not back down, from Demands the dead.

What the figure lets us think: belonging; dying for something one has never seen whole.

Voices — Communication

Town criers, journalists, influencers, whistleblowers. The Bond is an audience.

  • Heard by all, from the audience itself;
  • Knows what is circulating, from Connects everything it touches;
  • Their words spread, from Amplifies.

What the figure lets us think: being heard by everyone and being no one; speech without a body.

Genii Loci — the City

The spirit of a neighborhood, a street, a station. The Bond is a place.

  • Knows every street, from the place itself;
  • Cannot leave the city, from the place itself;
  • The city helps them, from Gathers strangers.

What the figure lets us think: dwelling; a place that remembers those who lived there.

Artificers — Technology

Smiths, builders, inventors, engineers: Wayland the Smith, Daedalus who built the labyrinth and gave his son wings, the rabbi of Prague who shaped the Golem. The Bond is a tool.

  • Their hands know before they do, from the tool itself;
  • Always finds a way, from Whatever can be done will be done;
  • What they make escapes them, from Escapes those who made it.

What the figure lets us think: making, and being made by what one makes; what we lose when a machine does it in our place; being able to do something, and choosing to refrain.

What appears

  • coinage, then paper money, then credit;
  • civil registries, identity cards, passports, borders;
  • printing, the telegraph, radio, a telephone in every pocket;
  • the subway, street lighting, the city that no longer sleeps;
  • the wheel, the plow, the mill, then the steam engine and the computer;
  • currencies without banks;
  • repair, the shared workshop, the moratorium: what we choose not to do;
  • the gift, which never stopped existing alongside exchange.

An Agent

Example — Samir, changer of Money
  • Bond: a contract. Traits: Knows the price of everything, Their signature binds.
  • Anchor Grew up in a family that gave everything away: Knows some things are not given back.
  • Anchor Volunteers at a community pantry: Gives without counting.

Money believes that everything can be exchanged. Samir knows that some things are not given back. If he gets the gift recognized as belonging to Money, Gives without counting will pass into the Bond: his Power will finally know what has no price — and other changers will learn to give.

Situations

Bringing a novelty. A Voice discovers village gossip, far older than itself; a Genius Loci discovers remote work, and a city emptying out; an Artificer discovers the moratorium, and that one can choose not to do what one knows how to do.

Contending for a novelty. Currencies without banks appear. Money wants them; Communication claims them, since they are nothing but messages; the Nation fears them, since they ignore borders. Their Agents contend over what they will become.

Transforming one's own Power. The Genius of a working-class neighborhood watches the City drive out those who brought it to life. They want their Power to stop forgetting its inhabitants.

Tones and time

The Collective lends itself to satire, thriller, social drama, and political fable.

It also sheds light on the other Horizons: an ancient god of the Divine may discover that Communication does better than it does, and a Power of the Collective that ancient rites were already technologies.

It joins Authority: the Crown and Revolution contend for the sovereignty of the Nation, but the Nation belongs to neither. Through Technology, it also joins Destruction: the bomb is the work that has most escaped those who made it.
