Example of Bet Determination
Here is a concrete example of determining Bets for an opposition in Glorantha Perspectives, specifically illustrating the impact of Focus and a Frame Factor.
The scene
Kallyr, a young Orlanthi clan chief (Worldview: Theism), enters the underground sanctuary of the Earth Temple. She faces Yanela, the High Priestess of Ernalda.
The Situation: Kallyr wants to convince Yanela to entrust her with the Earthshaker Staff, a sacred relic, because a patrol of the Lunar Empire is approaching their village. Yanela, rooted in tradition, refuses to let the relic leave the sanctuary.
1. Choose the Focus
The table states what it actually wants to decide now.
- Focus: Does Kallyr convince Yanela to entrust her with the Earthshaker Staff?
- First outcome: Yanela gives Kallyr the relic to protect the clan.
- Second outcome: Yanela keeps the relic in its protective stasis within the temple.
Kallyr is, among other things, a Lightning Swordswoman, Agile as the Wind, and carries an Iron Longsword. But the Focus concerns political and religious negotiation, not physical combat. Those elements therefore do not become Bets here.
2. Identify the Frame Factor
The location is the Holy of Holies of Ernalda, governed by the myth of The Peace of Ernalda. In this space, aggression, violence, and even raised voices are metaphysically suppressed by the Earth Goddess.
Kallyr might have wanted to use her Hot-tempered trait or her status as an Intimidating Warrior to pressure the priestess. But that means is closed by the fiction: it does not become a negative Bet; it is simply inadmissible until the Situation changes.
3. Identify the Bets on each side
Each retained element favours one of the two outcomes.
Bets favouring Kallyr obtaining the relic:
- Royal Orlanthi Lineage — legitimacy to ask for the Earth's help;
- Clan Chief's Eloquence — ability to formulate her plea;
- Urgency of the Lunar Threat — immediate need to protect the clan;
- Yanela's Love of the community — the thought of her people being slaughtered weakens her resolve.
Bets favouring Yanela keeping the relic:
- Kallyr's Youthful Impatience — it works against her in a formal negotiation;
- Sacred Duty of the Guardian — Yanela's primary motivation;
- The Temple's Stasis — the place itself presses toward leaving things unchanged;
- Distrust of Storm Worshippers — a cultural trait of the Earth cult.
This example shows that a Bet does not mechanically belong to its owner: a weakness of Yanela can favour Kallyr's desired outcome, while a weakness of Kallyr can favour the other one.
4. Read reality's answer
The resolution therefore has 4 Bets against 4 Bets.
The Bets on both sides are read according to Theism. Each side rolls four dice, looking for even numbers and explosive 6s. The roll produces reality's answer as a number of Successes, then the two answers are compared to determine which outcome prevails.
The Bets do not disappear afterwards: they remain the material the table uses to describe how Yanela yields, resists, hesitates, or transforms the Situation.
The same opposition could instead be played gradually, argument against argument, rather than resolving the whole negotiation at once. The chosen Zoom simply determines what question the table wants to decide now.
