Regard

Regard

Regard is a role-playing game framework built around two questions.

What matters here?

For a given Focus, at a given Zoom, the table recognizes the elements that genuinely matter. Those elements become Bets.

They do not come only from what is immediately visible in the scene. The Gaze can turn toward the character, their relationships, experience, memory, past, lore, the world, or what they anticipate about the future.

A Bet is an element that the game and the table recognize as relevant to the Focus, at this Zoom.

The second question appears when a way of inhabiting the world deserves to become mechanical too:

How does this way of inhabiting the world transform uncertainty?

That is the role of the Prism.

A Prism determines how uncertainty is read. It can remain discreet, as in the standard configuration, or strongly express a culture, cosmology, trope, or perspective.

These two ideas are the heart of Regard: what matters becomes mechanical; the way uncertainty is read can belong to the world too.

Play immediately

Regard provides a fully playable standard configuration.

It frames the Intention, Focus, and Zoom, places two outcomes in the balance, turns each Bet into a D6, reads even results as Successes, and compares the results.

You can simply play with this configuration.

The rest of the SRD explains how to decide what matters, handle disagreements, interpret results, and let fiction evolve without turning Regard into a catalogue of bonuses.

Transform Regard

But Regard was also designed for another possibility: when a world has a sufficiently strong logic, the mechanics can stop being generic and start expressing it.

A game may keep the standard configuration. It may also deeply change how Bets are selected, how a Prism reads uncertainty, the medium being used, the form of the result, or how several perspectives act together.

Glorantha Perspectives and Regard: Scooby-Doo show two very different extensions of Regard.

Regard is complete for play and open for design.
